As you all know, Brazil has been living under an extreme right wing coup d'etat. The illegitimate government has increased the criminalization and repression of the popular movements and social struggles while, at the same time, has been increasing the neoliberal reforms in the country.
There have been several cases of arrests and political persecution of popular leaders and activists in the last months, in an attempt at demobilization.
MST has currently 16 political prisoners all over the country. People who have been incarcerated for their activism and for struggling for land and for a more just world.
We have launched a campaign against the criminalization of the struggles and the immediate release of two of MST political prisoners: Fabiana and Claudelei, imprisoned since November in the State of Paraná, and accused for the crime of criminal organization.
The prisons are part of Operation Castra, commanded by the Civil Police of Paraná. Another action of the same operation resulted in the invasion of the Florestan Fernandes National School - ENFF, without a court order, last November, in Sao Paulo State.
Fabiana is a 22 years old young MST militant, who lives in Dom Tomás Balduíno Encampment
Claudelei Lima is 39 years old, lives in the Settlement Celso Furtado, is a farmer, radio broadcaster and, more recently, councilor of the municipality of Quedas do Iguaçu,
The accusation of these people only reveals the attempt to criminalize the struggle and popular organization. That is why we invite you to contribute to defending the struggle of human rights defenders.
The campaign proposes various solidarity actions.

We, the supporters of the MST that have signed this document, respectfully request that Your Excellency demands the repeal of the decrees against the MST members.
We understand that participating in the MST is a legitimate expression of citizenship. To be part of the MST is an attempt to improve the life conditions of thousands of people, in line with the Constitution's guarantee of agrarian reform in Brazil. Unfortunately, this constitutional mandate is only implemented when peasants mobilize, and for this reason there are camps of landless workers in Quedas do Iguaçu and Rio Bonito do Iguaçu.
To be part of the MST is not an act against the public order. It is not a crime to organize workers to protest in favor of agrarian reform. The criminal accusations against the members of a social movement, simply for being part of that movement, represent a direct violation of human rights and the liberty of expression and assembly. These rights are guaranteed in a range of international agreements that Brazil has signed, including the International Pact for Civil and Political Rights and the Inter-American Declaration of Human Rights.
Furthermore, the unfounded accusations against MST members, simply due to their membership in the movement, are illegitimate without evidence or the proper application of criminal law.
All people, including MST members, have the right to respond to legal accusations against them in freedom. The preventative detainment of MST members, without more specific cause, violates their right to the presumption of innocence. The present situation shows that MST members are assumed guilty until they can prove their innocence, which goes directly against the laws established in the Brazilian Federal Constitution and the many international agreements that Brazil has signed.
There is no justification for preventative detainment, if there are possibilities of applying other precautionary measures. All of the MST members that are being detained are defenders of human rights who have been criminalized, and all have a family, fixed residence, and a legitimate occupation.
For these reasons, we request that Your Excellency repeals the preventive detainment of the MST members, guaranteeing them this fundamental right of freedom to organize and protest, as well as their right to respond to their accusations in freedom and to be treated as innocent until proven guilty.
We believe in the justice and discernment of Your Excellency!
